How to talk about the future without pressure

An honest conversation about choices, mistakes and the kind of support that helps move forward.

Three teenagers talking and smiling

“What do you want to be?” is one of the hardest questions adults ask teens — not because there is no answer, but because it often carries an expectation: you should know by now.

Ask about interests, not professions

Instead of “what will you be?”, try “what caught your interest lately?” or “what went better than you expected?”. These questions open a conversation instead of closing it.

Support is not giving the right answer — it is staying close while someone looks for it.

A conversation about the future is not one big talk, but many small ones. Each of them can be calm.
